The IAU's release of the highly controversial Resolution5A, was seen as a demotion of Pluto by the public which caused a significant amount of retaliation and public outcry. However, it had a significant impact on the scientific community because it created detailed classification system for solar system bodies, and resolved the debate concerning Pluto's planetary status.
